This video demonstrates how to do safe laparoscopic fundoplication. The original fundoplication as described by Rudolph Nissen in 1956 involved passage of the gastric fundus behind the esophagus to encircle the distal 5 cm of the esophagus. A Nissen fundoplication, or laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication when performed via laparoscopic surgery, is a surgical procedure to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is a minimally invasive procedure which is done to restore the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve between the esophagus and the stomach) by wrapping the stomach around the esophagus.
