Note in this view frequently the spine can be seen as can bilateral pleural effusions, if present. AO here represents the descending aorta. Posterior pericardial effusions, if present, are anterior to the descending aorta and hence can be distinguished from a left pleural effusion (AML: Anterior mitral leaflet; AV: Aortic valve; AO: Aorta; LA: Left atrium; LV; Left ventricle; PML: Posterior mitral leaflet; RVOT: Right ventricular outflow tract).
