Procedure steps starting an IV line: Don gloves and apply tourniquet and palpate the vein, then cleanse the site. Prepare and inspect the catheter and stabilize the vein and tense the skin. Insert the stylet through the skin and pull only the needle back. Advance the catheter into the vein. Remove the tourniquet and secure the catheter and attach the IV line.
