Since the introduction of phacoemulsification, this technique was improved continuously and became the standard of care. But for very hard nuclei high energy levels have to be applied and separation of nuclear pieces is difficult. To increase cutting efficiency in these extreme hard lenses a special tip (Ultrachopper, Alcon Inc., USA) was developed.
