Long and Short Cases in Anesthesiology for exam-going postgraduate students was in our mind for a long time. Our systematic, comprehensive and standard teaching program is lacking in most of the institutes. Students in anesthesiology need in-depth knowledge of physiology of the human body as well as pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs in order to give safe anesthesia to the patient. The art of giving anesthesia is in turn dependent on technology of advanced monitoring gadgets as well as in-depth understanding of various subjects. A major part of the practical examination focuses on evaluating the examinee's knowledge of clinical case management, which comprises of long cases and short cases. The whole gamut of clinical cases may not be covered in every institute, however, the postgraduates are expected to be familiar with the management of all possible clinical situations they may encounter. Thus, an examinee should be able to revise all topics in a short span of time in order to perform well in exam.
In creating this book, we have approached knowledgeable and enthusiastic faculty and trainers in their subject fields to discuss an illustrative or interesting exam case. The aim was to create a number of small chapters that could be used as basis for individual reading or group tutorials for further exploration around a topic. This book is not intended to be a definitive text but contains mixture of core knowledge and detailed background information.
Knowledge can also be gained by attending various conferences, CME and review courses however not all cases be discussed at such forums and it is difficult to retain information gained in this manner. Very few books available give students an up-to-date and detailed knowledge as well as being easy to read, comprehend and retain. Thus, we came up with the idea of writing a book having all the cases (short and long) covering entire topics which may be asked in theory as well as practical examinations.
All contributors have worked hard in gathering latest information about the subject and understanding the pattern of examination of various medical universities throughout India. They have utilized their clinical experience and academic knowledge for writing chapters in our book and we thank them for sparing their precious time also we thank our publisher for being patient and supporting and for having complete faith in us.
In spite of our best efforts, a venture like this is unlikely to be error free. We hope that the exam going students will benefit from this book and we are eagerly waiting for feedback, suggestion as well as criticism so that we can make next edition even better.

Acknowledgments
It was with great trepidation that we embarked upon our book, a hitherto uncharted territory in our academic career. Needless to say, that in an endeavor of this magnitude, we have piled up monumental debts. The least we can do to redeem ourself is to pay tributes to those whose efforts made it possible for our work to see the light of day.
We would like to thank Dr Akhil Kant Singh and Dr Damarla Haritha who helped in proof reading the book.
We are extremely indebted to faculty, senior residents and junior residents for helping us to shape this book to its present form. Our special thanks to our friends for their support and faith. We would also like to thank our colleagues and juniors for their continuous support.
We are thankful to Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director), Mr MS Mani (Group President), Ms Chetna Malhotra Vohra (Associate Director—Content Strategy), Ms Pooja Bhandari (Production Head), and Ms Nikita Chauhan (Development Editor) of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for giving the go-ahead at the very beginning and helping us in every way possible to bring out this book.
Nothing can be complete without extending our thanks and gratitude to the one who has powered us from within to complete this work—GOD ALMIGHTY.
