The obstetricians are always busy with providing care to pregnant women so as to have a healthy outcome. During this journey, it is expected that the patient understand her condition and health issues, if any. Simultaneously, the patient also expects that she is explained everything in details. She needs to be made aware of her as well as her baby's well-being and what is happening to her. Therefore, counseling of the patients is important. In today's busy life, each practitioner should know the art of counseling.
This book on prenatal counseling will be welcomed by all clinicians providing prenatal care to pregnant women with various high risk factors. This is the first book highlighting the various aspects of counseling in general and how to counsel the patients with associated medical disorders or health issues affecting their pregnancy and newborns.
It is hoped that this book will be useful to all specialists who wish to keep up-to-date, and practitioners who wish to gain a comprehensive view of developments in the field and to learn about counseling.

Preface
In this era, where the public is much more aware about their rights and easy availability of information on social media and internet, the counseling of patients is becoming an important component of medical care in India also. The number of medicolegal complaints, especially in obstetric practice highlights the need of prenatal counseling. “Prenatal Counseling for Optimizing Pregnancy Outcomes” is an updated informative book with contributions from experts in their respective field. The chapters are carefully chosen to cover almost all conditions routinely faced by the practitioners. Prenatal Counseling for Optimizing Pregnancy Outcomes, first of its kind, hopefully will become an essential belonging for students, general practitioners, and specialists obstetricians and counselors in maintaining and improving the quality of prenatal counseling on various aspects.
This book covers the methodology and technique of counseling. The counseling of adolescents is a sensitive issue and needs special attention. The approach to be adopted and various problems to be kept in mind and to be addressed while conducting counseling session for adolescents are dealt separately. A brief attention is given to the dietary counseling before and during pregnancy. Premarital or prenatal counseling for thalassemia and genetic disorders is highlighted by two experts. An emerging situation is encountered more frequently day-by-day with the advancement in gynecology oncology specialty. A separate section on fertility preservation in patients with cancers and prenatal counseling of cancer survivors is informative and interesting. The common medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, thyroid disorders, chronic renal diseases, and heart diseases are discussed with important key points for counseling. Similarly, the topics of venous thromboembolism and contraception are also discussed to provide a comprehensive and complete package.
The readers will find that the language is simple, easy-to-read and understand and will be enriched with a wealth of knowledge and background information required to do prenatal counseling.
