There are significant contributions to Indian and World psychiatry from West Bengal. The title of the book West Bengal: Its Contribution to Indian Psychiatry is unique in every perspective. The book is a brainchild of its editor, Dr Kaustav Chakraborty. It is perhaps the first monograph which is going to showcase the rich contribution of renowned psychiatrists of West Bengal to the world community. The epidemiological studies, development of psychiatry institutes from its nascent stage till date have been beautifully summarized in this book.
At this juncture, I would like to thank all the contributors for their tireless efforts to make this book very informative and practically flawless.
The researches on community psychiatry, schizophrenia, culture-bound syndrome, child and adolescent psychiatry, somatoform disorders, addiction psychiatry, psychotherapeutic approaches, the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in shaping mental health services have been narrated in a nutshell.
This book has been an endeavor to script the contribution of stalwarts. The documented and evidence-based research works have been cited in this book.
The first 5000 copies of this book will reach to our community working in India and abroad. I am also very thankful to my co-editor, Dr Rajarshi Neogi. I am sure, this book will be very useful as a ready reference for the practitioners, postgraduate students, researchers, mental health professionals and all the stakeholders in years to come.

fm17Message from Organizing Chairperson ANCIPS 2020, Kolkata
Seasonal Greetings from Organizing Chairperson, Annual National Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS) 2020, Kolkata!
West Bengal as a state has rich cultural, academic and political history. It was the pivot of the movement for Indian independence. Long before that stalwarts from West Bengal ushered in Renaissance in India. Before many could think about psychiatric treatment, West Bengal showed the way by establishing mental asylums and outpatient departments in government medical colleges. The book titled West Bengal: Its Contribution to Indian Psychiatry published by the IPS, West Bengal State Branch showcases the mental health institutions, contributions of stalwarts in the field of mental health, researches in the field of major mental disorders, common mental disorders, sexual disorders, child and adolescent psychiatric disorder, psychiatric epidemiology, and psychology in West Bengal.
I, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of ANCIPS 2020, welcome all delegates to the ‘City of Joy’ which has survived two hundred years of colonial onslaught and still filled with all the positive vibes. I hope, this book will help you to understand the contribution of West Bengal towards Indian Psychiatry in a better way. I congratulate all those who have been associated with the release of this book.
Long Live IPS!
Warm regards

Seasonal Greetings from Organizing Secretary, ANCIPS 2020, Kolkata!
Indian Psychiatric Society has always been glorified with the heights of excellence achieved and shared amongst the members. The experiences of the eminent psychiatrists mixed with the dynamism in the form of write-ups bring laurels for the society and the country. West Bengal undoubtedly played a significant role in development of psychiatry as a fraternity in India.
West Bengal: Its Contribution to Indian Psychiatry, published by the IPS, West Bengal State Branch revives the bygone golden memories of Psychiatry in West Bengal. West Bengal with its rich cultural, political and academic heritage was also instrumental in propagating and popularizing psychiatric treatment in Indian subcontinent. Seminal studies in psychiatric epidemiology originated from this land which are still now highly regarded all over the world. The renowned communications between Sigmund Freud and Dr Girindra Shekhar Bose is known to all.
I, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of ANCIPS 2020, heartily welcome all the articles, and wishes towards the success of this book. I extend my special thanks to the editor of the book, Dr Kaustav Chakraborty and co-editors, Dr Ranjan Bhattacharyya and Dr Rajarshi Neogi who took all the pain to publish this book in time. With lots of wishes, I thank all authors who have been the part of this book and heartedly invite all the members to read the rich legacy of psychiatry in West Bengal.
Long Live IPS!

fm21Acknowledgments
I am highly indebted to Dr Gautam Saha, my elder brother, for giving me unconditional support in publishing this book and having faith upon me to deliver the good. I am also very grateful to my co-editors, Dr Ranjan Bhattacharyya and Dr Rajarshi Neogi, my two best friends and seniors as well, who pitched in with the difficult task of editing and bailing me out in the time of crisis. I would also like to acknowledge the role of Professor Dr OP Singh, Dr Sujit Sarkhel, Dr Neelanjana Paul, and Dr Arabinda Brahma for mentoring me. I am highly indebted to all the authors for timely submission of the chapters and who took all the pain to take time off their busy schedule to write for this book. I am highly grateful to all the members of the advisory board who are my esteemed seniors and have kept their faith in me. I would also like to remember my mentors during post-graduate days, Professor Dr Ajit Avasthi and Professor Dr Sandeep Grover, who made me capable of what I am today. I should also acknowledge the role of my departmental staff, Mr Saikat Bairagya who helped me a lot with the works of editing. Dr Sandip Nandy, my beloved junior also did some of the editing works. Last but not the least, the work would not have been possible without the unconditional support of my wife, Dr Moumita Chatterjee, who was quite tolerant with my ‘computer and mobile addiction’ which allowed me to complete the work in time. Once again, I thank all the members of Indian Psychiatric Society, West Bengal State Branch for believing in me and entrusting me with this difficult task.
I would like to thank Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director), Ms Chetna Malhotra Vohra (Associate Director-Content Strategy) and Prerna Bajaj (Development Editor) of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for their untiring support.fm22
