Acne is now considered a chronic inflammatory disorder and what was commonly seen in adolescence is persisting in adults right up to the menopause. In spite of advances in the understanding of pathogenesis of acne, the incidence of postacne scarring has not reduced. In fact, more and more patients in the older age group are coming for the treatment of postacne scarring and this poses another challenge. The birth of the second edition was initiated by advances in the field of energy based devices particularly microneedling radiofrequency treatments which are independent of skin color. Innovations in the use of ablative lasers by combining different techniques such as the 5-tier technique are giving better results over a shorter period of time.
This book is intended to be a simple step by step guide for the treatment of acne scars. It can be considered as a comprehensive reference as it not only provides management of individual techniques as well as individual type of scars. An algorithmic approach gives the reader an overall understanding how to plan management of this challenging condition. Each contributor is an expert and they have given practical tips on how best to tackle patients with postacne scars.
I hope this book proves an invaluable resource for dermatologists and plastic surgeons who deal with management of patients with postacne scars.

Preface to the First Edition
Acne is a very common disorder in adolescence; and, unfortunately, scarring following acne occurs early and may affect 95% of patients depending on severity of acne and delay in treatment. Acne scars are predominantly seen on the face and can cause profound psychosocial distress in the growing years as well as in adulthood. Treating acne scars is challenging as postacne scars are polymorphic and management involves the use of various modalities depending on the type of scars.
The aim of this book is to give a comprehensive step-by-step guide to the treatment of acne scars, which can be understood and followed by a young physician entering into the world of esthetic surgery as well as older physicians not exposed to newer techniques. This book is unique because individual types of scars have been dealt with in detail so that the physician understands the pathophysiology and principle behind their treatment, as well as approach to the patient as a whole. The book deals with the art and skill of combining various techniques of acne scar revision, their proper application to give optimum results and the unique challenges posed by skin of color. Emphasis has been laid on the possible complications that can occur, particularly in darker skins and their detailed management.
There has been an explosion of newer techniques for treating acne scars and the shift has occurred from invasive technologies requiring a lot of downtime to minimally invasive techniques, requiring lesser downtime, which benefits patients.
Each contributor is an expert in the field with wide experience and has given a practical approach to the management of acne scars. This book will be an invaluable resource to dermatosurgeons, plastic surgeons and esthetic surgeons dealing particularly with facial scars.

Acknowledgments
The birth of this book was initiated by young and enthusiastic dermatologists, who showed great interest in my presentations during various scientific meetings. It incubated and took shape when there was an explosion of newer, minimally invasive techniques in dealing with acne scars. I am indebted to my expert contributors who have crystallized their experiences and shared their personal innovative techniques in dealing with the topics.
I am grateful to all my patients for their unwavering support and complete faith reposed in me, which helped to innovate and improvise.
I am thankful to my teachers, particularly, Dr Chetan Oberai and late Dr PN Behl who injected me with academic enthusiasm right from the beginning of my career.
I am also thankful to Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director), Mrs Pooja Bhandari (Head-Production), Ms Chetna Malhotra Vohra (Associate Director—Content Strategy) Dr Rajul Jain (Development Editor), Ms Ruby Sharma (Project Manager) and the entire team of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for their help in bringing out the book.
My deepest gratitude goes to my family, my spouse Dr JM Khunger and my children, Dr Monica and Dr Arjun, who let me work unhindered in writing this book.
