In 2010, a group of physicians practicing in the fields of Diabetology and Endocrinology felt the need of forming an organization for the advancement in learning and fostering knowledge in the fields of Diabetology, Endocrinology, Metabolic Disorders and Clinical Nutrition. With that objective, the Integrated Diabetes and Endocrine Academy (IDEA) was formed in 2011. From a small and humble beginning, it grew up to become an eminent organization and its annual conference, the IDEACON has become one of the most sought after conferences in India.
The activities of IDEA include holding regular monthly CMEs, holding health camps in Kolkata and nearby villages, distributing free insulin to poor patients, holding IDEACON and supporting medical research. Another initiative of IDEA has been the publication of handbooks on diabetes, endocrinology and related disorders. Two books have been already published by eminent publishers and the books were freely distributed to IDEACON delegates in 2017 and 2018.
The earlier books were on common disorders in diabetes and endocrinology. This time, the book deals with uncommon problems in diabetes and endocrinology which a physician may face in his/her clinical practice. This is a case-based approach and the cases are all real-world cases, actually seen by the contributors. We were fortunate to get valuable contributions from IPGMER, Medical College and Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, institutions where DM courses in endocrinology are conducted. We are grateful to all our authors from these institutions and to those from the IDEA fold, all of whom have freely given their time and effort to contribute to this casebook. The book covers a wide range of uncommon clinical problems or unusual clinical presentation. Sometimes the presentation is fairly common, and the authors have discussed complex management protocols.
We are grateful to Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd. for publishing the book and to Mr Sabyasachi Hazra in particular as without his constant support and follow up the book would never have taken shape. We acknowledge the support of Mr Ranandu Bhattacharya of Cipla in producing this book. All of us, authors and editors alike will feel successful, if this book serves the purpose for which it was intended and created.
