It gives me a great pleasure to write the foreword for the book ICU Manual for Nurses. The book has nine sections covering from the essentials of patient care like assessment, infections, mechanical ventilation and monitoring to the specialty nursing. The format of the book is easy-to-read and understand. The information contained in the chapters is well structured and presented in a clear, concise and stepwise fashion.
There are not sufficient books written keeping Indian critical care nursing needs in mind. I congratulate the authors who have contributed to the contents of the book. I hope this handbook will serve as a reference guide to the beginners as well as practising critical care nurses.

fm11Foreword
I feel a great pride and pleasure to write this foreword for the book of ICU Manual for Nurses.
Nurses form perhaps the most important component of the team which cares for the Critically Ill patients. They are constantly with the patients, and their constant vigil as well as actions go a long way in the contribution to the effort to save the life of a critically ill patients.
Intensive care has come a long way since the era when caring nurses and doctors looked after the really sick patients in a section of the hospital. We now have an array of equipment and the science of treating these patients, and this has evolved to become a full fledged speciality. As a result, all those who work in the field of critical care need a sound knowledge of the theory and practice.
This training involves reading material as well as bedside practice. There is a huge amount of material available for training doctors in this field. However, in India, the training of nurses has lagged far behind the training of doctors. The Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine [ISCCM] has recognized this deficiency and has been conducting the training programs for nurses. Amongst the office bearers of ISCCM who have strived hard to cover this lacuna, the name of Dr Prakash Shastri stands first. He has been amongst the few who have consistently attempted to systematically train the nurses in this specialty.
The result of all his hard work has been showcased in this book. It covers all the important areas which the ICU nurses need to be taught, from theory to practice, and from ventilators and other machines to the infection control measures like handwashing and others. All these chapters have been written with scientifically accurate language, and it is still easy to read because of the lucidity.
Dr Prakash Shastri and all the coauthors deserve a lot of kudos for coming out with this book, through their patience and hard work. It is a must read for all nurses who are training in intensive care and also a must for the ICU nurses room tables.
I wish all the best for this book and hope that it will add to the competence of ICU nurses and contribute significantly to the saving of lives which we all attempt in ICUs.

fm13Preface
Critical care nursing has grown as a specialty around the world. However, in many regions, there is still an urgent need for professional education to improve the outcome of patient suffering from life-threatening illness. Critical care nurses work in settings where patients require complex assessment, high intensity therapies, interventions, and continuous vigilance. They need specialized knowledge, skills and experience to provide care to the patients.
The contribution of nurses toward achieving the goals in critical care is equal to any other healthcare professionals, if not more. In recognizing the responsibility of nurses in ICU, the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine has started the Indian Diploma in Critical Care Nursing course. This manual intends to meet the needs of this course.
