Abstract

This chapter describes assessment of skills such as observation, checklist, practical examination, viva, and objective structured clinical examination. Teachers have many opportunities to observe students in real situations of interaction. The observational techniques are systematic methods of recording these observations for the purpose of evaluation. Anecdotal records, checklists, rating scales and sociometric techniques are included in this category. A checklist consists of a listing of steps, activities or behavior which the observer records when an incident occurs. A checklist is a type of informational job aid used to reduce failure by compensating for potential limits of human memory and attention. It helps to ensure consistency and completeness in carrying out a task. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a modern type of examination often used in health sciences (e.g. medicine, chiropractic, physical therapy, radiography, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry) to test clinical skill performance and competence in skills such as communication, clinical examination, medical procedures/prescription, exercise prescription, joint mobilization/manipulation techniques and interpretation of results.
