Abstract

This chapter discusses conventional transbronchial needle aspiration. Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) is a diagnostic technique that allows obtaining tissue from the deeper submucosa and beyond the confines of the endobronchial tree in a minimally invasive manner. It is used mainly for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and other mediastinal lesions. Its further indications include the diagnosis of granulomatous, inflammatory and infectious diseases involving the mediastinal lymph nodes. Endobronchial needle aspiration (EBNA) is the technique in which the transbronchial needle is used to obtain cytology specimen from the core of an endoscopically visible lesion such as endobronchial masses, and for drainage of cystic lesions adjoining the tracheobronchial tree. Planning of C-TBNA and chest imaging study, required tools, mapping systems of the lymph nodes, contraindications and possible complications, diagnostic yield of transbronchial needle aspiration, endobronchial needle aspiration and peripheral transbronchial needle aspiration are covered in this chapter.
