Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of cardiopulmonary exercise testing. The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is a noninvasive method that facilitates simultaneous assessments of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems at rest and then during exercise with a progressive workload on a cycle ergometer or treadmill. Cardiopulmonary exercise test is a valuable tool in several clinical applications including populations that are healthy as well as patients contending with symptoms or known disease. CPET provides an integrated evaluation of ventilation (air inhaled and exhaled), consumption of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide (through the analysis of exhaled gases), heart rate, electrocardiogram, oxygen saturation and systemic arterial blood pressure, to provide a comprehensive perspective regarding lung, cardiac, vascular and muscle physiology. Equipment required, pretest recommendations, test protocols, CPET procedure, key variables, normal values and significance, anaerobic, lactate, and ventilatory thresholds are also covered in this chapter.
