“Urticaria” and “angioedema” are common problems. In many patients, they present as chronic disease with a severe impact on their lives. In fact, most patients with chronic urticaria currently do not have their disease under control. The last years we have seen considerable progress in our understanding of urticaria and angioedema. We now better understand the pathogenesis of the disease, have tools for its management, and, most importantly, effective treatment options. This progress is largely based on what we have learnt from our patients. Our patients have told us about the impact of urticaria, the unmet needs, our gaps of knowledge, and how to improve our management approaches to this disease. We need to continue to listen to our patients and learn from this. This Handbook of Urticaria helps with this. The more than 20 chapters written by a total number of 68 authors are based on patients’ stories, actual patients’ cases from clinical practice as well as physician experience and published evidence.
This Handbook on Urticaria would not exist without the global network of Urticaria Centers of Reference and Excellence (UCARE). Most of the authors of the chapters of this book are UCARE members, and much of the information presented in this handbook is from what we have learnt from patients managed by UCAREs, in all parts of the world. The UCARE network aims to increase knowledge of urticaria and to educate physicians who treat patients with urticaria, on a global scale. UCAREs work together in numerous projects, such as the development of this handbook, but also on a global registry study, CURE, as well as scientific projects and educational formats and events. We thank the members of the UCARE network and the authors for their continued dedication and contributions to this book. We are sure this Handbook on Urticaria will help to improve patient care and disease management.
This Handbook on Urticaria exists because of Kiran Godse. Kiran and his UCARE team are a motor of our network, and we are very grateful to him and his team for the energy and determination invested in this handbook.
We hope that you enjoy the read and benefit from the information presented in this book.
May it help to improve the treatment of urticaria and angioedema worldwide!

Preface
I am happy to present “Handbook of Urticaria” to the readers. This book is unique in terms of its concept and preparation. The purpose of writing this handbook is to increase awareness about urticaria among family physicians, consultant physicians, and postgraduate students of dermatologists. The book is an initiative of GA2LEN Urticaria Centers of Reference and Excellence (UCARE). Authors from UCARE centers all over the world have contributed chapters in this book. The book contains chapters covering all aspects of urticaria from its presentation to the management.
I am sure readers will appreciate the reader-friendly nature of the book because of several clinical images, tables, and figures. I thank the management of DY Patil Hospital, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India for constant support in academic endeavors. I also thank Associate Editors, Dr Abhishek De and Dr Anant Patil for their constant support and help in coordinating with authors of all chapters and completing the task of writing the book in time.
I wish to thank my family, Dr Meenal, Dr Gauri, and Atharva for supporting my academics.
