Abstract

This chapter aims to present a brief discussion on ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo is implanted anywhere other than the cavity of the uterus. It could get implanted within the fallopian tube, ovary, abdomen, etc. A heterotopic pregnancy is a combination of two pregnancies occurring simultaneously at two different implantation sites. Amongst the general population, ectopic pregnancy is known to occur in 19/1,000 pregnancies. The incidence is higher—4% in women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques for conception. Risk factors, clinical features, and diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy are covered in this chapter. Cesarean scar pregnancy is defined as the implantation of the products of conception in a myometrial defect seen at the level of a previous uterine incision. Interstitial pregnancy, cornual pregnancy, ovarian pregnancy, abdominal pregnancy, heterotopic pregnancy, laparoscopy, primordial and primary prevention of ectopic pregnancy during IVF, management of tubal pregnancy, management of nontubal ectopic pregnancy, etc. are the other important topics which are covered in this chapter.
