Abstract

Spinal cord is the caudal part of central nervous system. It develops from caudal part of neural tube. Neural tube is formed from neurectoderm which is a specialized part of ectoderm. The spinal cord has 31 segments. Each segment has a pair of spinal nerves. Typical spinal nerves are present from T1 to L2 segment which is thoracolumbar outflow of sympathetic impulses. Spinal cord has outer white matter and inner gray matter. This chapter covers the external features of spinal cord, internal features, gray matter, and blood supply. Each segment of spinal cord is supplied by unpaired anterior spinal artery, pair of posterior spinal arteries, pair of spinal branch of intersegmental artey, and the lateral side of spinal cord is supplied by vasa corona which is a plexus of arteries over the pia mater.
