Abstract

The chapter deals with the muscles of facial expression. The facial muscles, group of about 20 flat skeletal muscles, lies under the facial skin. They originate from the skull or fibrous structures and radiate to the skin through an elastic tendon. However, they are not enclosed by a fascia except the buccinators in contrast to other skeletal muscles. Muscles of the mouth are listed as orbicularis oris muscle, buccinator muscle, levator labii superioris muscle, depressor labii inferioris muscle, mentalis muscle, etc. Muscles of the nose like nasalis muscle and procerus muscle, muscles of the eyelid, muscles of the cranium and neck, and facial paralysis are described.
