Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the Ryle’s tube feeding. This chapter discusses the procedure, analysis of pH in aspirated fluids, and basic types of enteral nutrition in the table format. Identify the right patient with inpatient number printed in identity band. Perform hand hygiene and explain the procedure to the patient, if the patient is conscious. Make the patient in high Fowler\'s position to prevent aspiration. Check the tube position by instillation or air and hear it with stethoscope in patient’s abdomen (or) by checking pH level (dip litmus paper into gastric aspirated content, 1–3 reveals proper tube placement). Aspirate gastric contents for every 4–6 hours to check delayed gastric emptying (unless the volume is great, aspirated gastric contents can be reinstilled) and hang feeding bag on IV pole clamp.
