I am extremely pleased to present the fourth edition of Pediatric Nursing. This textbook was first published in 2007; second edition in 2009 and third edition in the year 2014 with reprint in 2010. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the readers for their exceptional and remarkable acceptance of this textbook.
As per opinion of some readers and reviewers, the textbook provides a concise overview of child health nursing, as it is designed to make learning easier by including more practical, relevant and important aspects but avoiding huge details of information. The book is student-friendly which is very useful for all nursing students of diploma and undergraduate courses, because it includes different aspects of common childhood conditions in illness and wellness which are seen in the community and facility levels. Both General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) and BSc Nursing students can refer the textbook to clarify basic concepts of child health nursing. Postgraduate students can also refer this book to recapitulate their basic knowledge and information.
This edition is enriched with latest statistical data related to Child Health and a Glossary with important terminologies for in-hand reference. It also has some additions of important topics on neonatal and childhood problems.
I hope this textbook will serve as a useful guide for understanding the fundamental ideas related to child healthcare. Ultimately, this will help to provide a significant contribution by the nursing professionals working for the children in hospitals and community, especially in low resource settings areas.
Suggestions and comments will be gladly accepted to modify the textbook and to make it more useful in next edition. Furthermore, the readers can consult Indian and Foreign reference books, journals and websites for in-depth study of child health along with this book to have up-to-date knowledge and practice.

Preface to the First Edition
‘With the birth of every child, man may calculate that God is still hopeful about the World He created’ (Wordsworth). But healthy survival of the children is threatened in every moment. Child health problems are shocking and alarming throughout the world, especially in the developing countries. Expert and empathetic approach is essential to minimize these problems and to reduce the inexcusable causes of childhood morbidity, mortality and disability.
A pediatric nurse is the key person in child care team. It is expected that a pediatric nurse should have competence and good judgment based on specialized up-to-date knowledge, skill and positive attitude. A clinical nurse should be enriched to understand the problems of the children and to help them whenever needed. So the pediatric nurse needs special preparation in child health to contribute towards healthy child, the future productive and creative individual.
Being a teacher of General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) Curriculum for 15 years, I felt the need for a textbook on Pediatric Nursing for GNM students. When I received the proposal, I had decided to accept this work in spite of my hardwork schedule.
This book is fully in accordance with the new GNM syllabus as recommended by the Indian Nursing Council (INC). Keeping in mind the level of the students, I have tried to use simple language and clarify the complicated aspects concisely with rational, as relevant for the need of the students.
It seems that the book will be helpful to the nurses working in the clinical areas and community to review their knowledge and practice in different aspects of child care. I think interest and practice with up-to-date knowledge will contribute to develop confidence in them.
Most references used in the preparation of this title are from the books and journals, written by the eminent Indian authors. Foreign books, WHO newsletters, journals and periodicals are also reviewed for preparation of the contents. I have tried with best effort to prepare and enrich the book considering the level of the students and placement of the course according to the INC Syllabus. Unintentional mistakes are regretted and will be rectified.
Suggestions for further enrichment of the book will be gladly accepted. Constructive criticism and comments are always welcomed. I hope my efforts will be useful to the nursing students and nursing personnel working for the children.
