The third edition of our Textbook of Endocrine Surgery is dedicated to our families, endocrine surgical fellows, residents, students, endocrinologists, and our patients.
Contributors Preface
fm17Endocrine surgery is a field in constant evolution. When surveying the dizzying array of operative approaches, imaging studies, and biochemical and genetic tests that have become routine components of the endocrine surgeon's armamentarium, it is easy for one to forget that this is still a nascent surgical specialty. After all, Theodor Kocher was awarded a Nobel Prize for developing the technique for safe thyroidectomy in 1909, just a little more than a century ago. The first successful parathyroid operations took place in the early 1920s. Imaging and surgery for adrenal and pancreatic tumors were even more recent developments.
In this third edition of Textbook of Endocrine Surgery, we aim to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of our burgeoning and continually changing field. Since the release of our first edition in 1997, we have witnessed an explosion of new techniques and technologies, including widespread utilization of intraoperative parathyroid hormone measurement to facilitate focused parathyroidectomy, the introduction of novel minimally-invasive and robotic approaches to cervical and retroperitoneal tumors, and the development of molecular testing to more accurately characterize indeterminate thyroid nodules. All of the existing chapters of our previous editions have been reviewed and updated, and many new chapters have been added to reflect advancements in the field. We hope this textbook will continue to serve as an invaluable resource for everyone interested in endocrine surgery, from students to practitioners. Perhaps the inspiration for the next wave of innovation in endocrine surgery lies within its fm18pages.
Dr Wen T Shen MD MA
