7Foreword
It is my pleasure to write the foreword for the book Ward Management and Administration for Nurses written by a young and experienced author Professor Dr Manjubala Dash.
We are fortunate to have lived through a period of historic milestones and turn of the millennium. The last millennium saw dramatic technical advances in the field of medical science, which enforces all health professionals to maintain pace with the development.
This book rightly focuses on undergraduate and postgraduate students, since the future truly rests on them. This book has been well structured as per the syllabus of the Indian Nursing Council. The language, style of presentation is well framed with examples and adequate figures, schematic diagrams, which will help the nursing students to understand the subject easily.
I congratulate the author and I am confident that this book will receive wide acceptance and appreciation from Nursing Students, Practicing Nurses and Faculty of Nursing across the country.

9Preface
It is my great pleasure to introduce the textbook on Ward Management and Administration for Nurses. Until fifties, the word nursing meant only bedside care, and the nurses were only somebody to listen and act according to the doctor's instructions. It was mainly because the preparation for nurses was so deficient. Preparation for the nurses began to change according to the need to meet the trends in the hospital care, equipment, technology and consumer demand. The role of nurses has extended and expanded to meet all the demands of the public. So the nurses must be aware of all the routine care in the ward, need of the patient and other needs of the public too. This created interest in my mind to contribute this book towards the nursing field. I have credited one book ‘MCQs in Midwifery’ which has been popular among the students’ community. Further, I realized that there are very minimum books on Ward Management and Administration by Indian authors. So the felt need made me to write this book.
The book has 8 chapters related to hospital activities and the role of the nurse as a leader, planner, organizer, delegator, coordinator, educator, counselor, manager, administrator, communicator, etc. To write all the chapters I referred many books, collected material and did Internet searches and also recalled the self-experience. The content has been organized in a simple way keeping in mind the readers of this book. Errors are unavoidable. So, it is the humble request of mine to the readers to bring to the notice if any mistake and any suggestions, which can enlighten the knowledge and help for the further editions.
