9Preface
Nutrition in Obesity and Diabetes is targeted towards health professionals dealing with overweight and diabetic individuals in their daily practice. In view of the increasing prevalence of overweight and diabetes in South East Asia and India in particular, our vision has been to provide the reader with the scientific evidence required while planning prevention strategies or treatment guidelines for overweight, obese, and diabetic individuals. It provides health professionals with an updated, extensive reference source, compiled by experts. This book is an essential purchase for professionals working in nutrition, medicine, endocrinology, health sciences, and related areas. It was our aim to have a practical orientation, with emphasis on evidence based nutrition practice in obesity and diabetes.
Each chapter has a brief abstract, introduction, and conclusion. Chapters 1 and 2 cover the basic principles of estimating energy requirements of an individual and assessment of nutritional status and body composition. Readers will find these sections very useful as nutritional assessment and estimating energy requirement are the fundamental steps before planning a dietary schedule. Chapter 3 discusses the existing evidence of the role of nutrition and lifestyle factors in the etiology of obesity and diabetes. The nutritional goals in the management of obesity and diabetes are emphasized in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 discusses the different treatment options for obesity and includes sections by experts on physical activity and behavioral modifications. The nutritional management of different types of diabetes and complications of diabetes are described in chapters 69. Complementary and alternative medicine therapies are becoming more popular and Chapter 10 reviews the evidence on some of the complementary and alternative therapies used for patients with obesity and diabetes.
We are particularly pleased with providing readers with a ready reckoner appendix section. This is the main distinct and invaluable highlight of this book. This section provides tables with macro- and micronutrient content of more than 350 food items which can be used to plan individualized diets, exhaustive list of energy cost of activities which can be used to calculate energy expenditure of an individual and to plan exercise schedules. Healthy recipe options with nutritive values and menu plans with Indian, Continental, 10and Pan Asian options have also been included. The information in the tables and the appendix in general, will be of great use while planning diets and counseling individuals on their daily food intake. Case studies have been included to demonstrate on how to apply the theory into practice. We are very hopeful that this book will be of great utility to students, nutritionists, and all health professionals.
