7Preface
Nursing is a challenging profession where the nurses play dynamic roles in day-to-day life. One of such roles is becoming a ‘talented nutritionist’. Learning of nutrition and dietetics has become a vital part of nursing care since the therapeutic nutrition forms an important part of treatment for all age-groups, though the medications will treat the pathological causes. But stability of a patient's health depends upon providing the right kind of nutrition as per the patient's disease condition. Therefore, imparting, updating and inculcating knowledge about nutrition in relation to the disease condition became an important need for each nurse. This is the reason why in the Post Basic BSc Nursing curriculum, nutrition and dietetics have been added as their subject in the first year.
Keeping all these aims in mind, this textbook on nutrition and Dietetics is prepared to meet the requirement as per the Indian Nursing Council recommendations. This book is divided into four sections: first—nutrition, second—dietetics, third—infant and child nutrition, and fourth—community nutrition, and contains 32 chapters.
For better understanding of the content, each chapter has the glossary, illustrations done with simple lucid language, and with adequate tables and diagrams wherever needed. For students’ betterment, previous years’ question papers (six in number) have also been provided. Be it the students or teachers, whosoever goes through this book, is sure to get clear-cut knowledge about the concept of nutrition and dietetics. For students, contents in this book will be adequate, apt to the point, and also helpful for them to score well in the examinations.
I wish the students all the best!
I Clement
