5Preface
It was in late 1970s when I was in my primary school level, I heard for the first time about In vitro fertilization or “test tube baby”. Since then our knowledge of reproductive medicine has expanded rapidly. Standing at the middle of the 20th century, assisted reproduction is no doubt one of the most dynamic, developing field in the human medicine. However, in spite of our increasing knowledge and skills many questions remain unanswered and new concerns and problems constantly arised.
Among the so-called assisted reproduction techniques, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is the least invasive, least stressful, least hazardous, and least expensive technique. Although IUI with the whole spit ejaculate has been practiced for a long time, after the introduction IVF, the development of sperm preparation techniques resulted in a renewed interest for IUI.
Currently, IUI is often combined with controlled ovarian hyper stimulation; in contrast to ovulation induction where the aim is to restore a normal menstrual cycle with ovulation from one follicle, controlled ovarian hyper stimulation is the induction of multifollicular growth.
Quality control for andrology laboratories is one of the main topics of this book, deals with quality management in the clinical andrology laboratories, with emphasis on different aspects of internal and external quality control systems and programs. The practical details featured in some chapters are widely applicable and will be especially valuable to those who are inexperienced in a particular methodology or procedure. However, variations and modifications to the procedures described may be necessary, depending on the circumstances of individual laboratories. All chapters are well and concisely written. They are presented in a consistent format and are appropriately illustrated with clear line-drawings, figures, and color plates. Salient features and information are summarized in tables and charts and references at the end of each chapter provide a valuable guide for further reading.
This book carries article regarding the different aspects of IUI. Each chapter discusses mainly the day-to-day problems based on the theoretical aspect and practical management of IUI. Though the IUI procedure is not difficult compared to other methods of ART, but I am sure many of you, like me, have encountered difficulties in different steps of IUI.
I am sure this book will help many young professionals in their practice. Finally I like to salute the pioneers Professor Robert G Edwards and Prof. Patrick Stepto, for their contribution in the field of reproductive medicine.
