5FOREWORD
Nursing is an evolving young profession, which has been continuous growth and expansion of vast amount of knowledge over a period of time. Nursing health services have become complex. There has been a growing concern about their functioning both in the developed and developing countries. Questions are raised about their functioning both in the developed and developing countries. Questions are raised about the quality of todays nursing care, utilization and coverage of health services, benefits to community health in terms of morbidity and mortality reduction and improvement in health status of the recipients of care.
The future of academics in the country is subjected to causeless political winds and turbulence that hard deep impact on the policy initiatives. At a time, when modern society is experiencing escalating expectations, the health care administrators need to become more sensitive to various aspects of excellence and how best to achieve them.
Planning and management are relatively new subjects. Planning is for tomorrow, management is for today. These subjects have acquired great importance during the past two decades. The increasing demands for medical and nursing management serivices, in the face of limited resources, has brought out the need for careful planning and management of health services, planning and management are considered essentials if higher standardes of health and evidence based nursing health care are to be achieved we live in an age and culture where efficiency and productivity mean a great deal. We have become obsessed with matters of technique and our technological skills have developed tremendously. The ultimate aim of nursing services administration is to provide quality health care to people in the hospital community and home. A nurse will have to team-up with top, middle and lower level management and also have to manage subordinates for which the art of dealing with people and effective relationship is very important. Nurses role is to coordinate and manage the care delivered by other health care providers, community groups, non governmental organizations, family members and members from other sectors to achieve individual and community action for health. Infact “organizing, coordinating and managing the health care system as one of the care elements of nursing practice.
A textbook of nursing management and services in a modest attempt to generate a relevant literature in the subjects of nursing management and services not only for the nursing students as per the ongoing Indian Nursing council curriculum. I believe that this book will prove to be fruitful resource to meet the needs of all those wish to practice evidence based quality nursing care.
