fm7Foreword
The human body is a marvel of natural evolution, from primitive cauldron, making the chemical soup, in the chaotic ocean of cooling the Earth. The first bonding of atoms floating in the ocean came together to form the primitive cell. The origin of man is a feat of God’s chemistry and till today remains the fundamental basics of all life forms.
It is the chemistry of atoms which has evolved into the physical structure we call them living beings. Today, man has embarked into unraveling mysteries of the universe, human beings and what makes them tick. Today, we have science that developed into an understanding called Biochemistry. Medicine concentrates more on care, focusing more on Pathology, Medicine and Surgery. Anatomy, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Biochemistry are relegated to the concept of basic sciences. This segregation, unfortunately, belies the importance of these basic concepts in health care.
The world over, in the last decade, especially in the developed Western countries, there is an integration both in horizontal and vertical directions in the handling of teaching of health care concepts to learners in the medicine and dentistry. Today, the teaching of these basic science subjects is no longer separate but part of an integrated curriculum, which is primarily disease or an organ oriented.
The subject of biochemistry as in medicine has evolved to be more oriented to dental diseases rather than being an esoteric-related subject. The dynamics of dental diseases, which was previously mechanical, i.e. fillings and replacements; today, increasingly, have a paradigm shift to the concepts of preventing, saving teeth and nurturing teeth to good health. To facilitate this move, there are a number of new materials and techniques which help a dentist to achieve the new goals. The role of saliva is paramount in these concepts.
Biochemistry as it is taught today or the contemporary textbooks pay little attention to its role in health and disease. The constituents of the saliva, the dynamics of ionic exchanges with the tooth and gingival tissue direct the run of the course of the disease. It has now dawned upon the dental faculties and thus, the renewed interest in its mechanics. fm8It is thus, gratifying to see a book being written by young and dynamic teacher, who understand today’s concepts and the role in dental diseases. Consequently, a book of this nature would be a boon to all dental personnel in the management of the patients.
The other exemplary feature is the organized manner in which the biochemical aspects are presented. As a true teacher, there is a good blend of adequate data and the necessities of an examination system. The book is a welcome addition to the references available for good understanding and the student’s need for performance in an examination system.
The book encompasses all the medical biochemistry basics, necessary for the dental students as well as special attention to the role of saliva. The book truly embodies the concept of the mouth-mirroring, the general health of the person.
The lucid presentation, the easy and understandable structure of the presentation in Dr Purvi’s book Practical Biochemistry for BDS aptly reaches the needs of dentistry. Even her assimilation of the biochemistry of the human body is succinct to a point and that is why her book is so relevant. She has developed the basic concept of integrating biochemistry into disease care. Albeit, this is the first volume; in the years to come, her future presentations will much be awaited. The initial presentation has shown us the horizon and we are gasping for more.
I, for one, am on my tenterhooks awaiting her next presentation.

fm9Preface
The inspiration of this book comes from all my students, whose constant queries make me wiser each day as I teach them.
Biochemistry is a vast subject and is rapidly growing. It is quite challenging for the students in the dental stream to stay updated, read, understand and yet keep their information concise enough.
In reality, this is a small effort to help students, who want to learn biochemistry in general and students of dentistry in particular as the subject matter included is in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by Dental Council of India (DCI).
Although there is no limit, as to how much one should read for learning a subject as an interesting and vast as biochemistry, still I have tried to restrict myself strictly to the latest syllabus as prescribed by the DCI.
Practical Biochemistry for BDS is an exclusive book catering to the demands of these students.
The book takes the reader onto a journey into the field of Practical Biochemistry, beginning with making the reader familiar with the laboratory, its equipment, safety procedures, and methodology for working and how to get accurate results.
The various practical exercises have been divided into four sections: (i) Qualitative, (ii) Quantitative, (iii) Clinical Biochemistry, and (iv) Demonstration Exercises. Each section has a brief introduction as to what is its significance and why the students have to learn about them. Each chapter has been followed-up with a short viva voce question series to brush their viva skills.
There has been an absolute effort to keep the language and expression of the book simple, reader friendly, and easy to understand, making it suitable for students and teachers alike.
I have wrapped off the book with a brief chapter on the recent advances in the field of Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory Techniques. These techniques have not been prescribed in the DCI syllabus. However, I feel it to be of great importance for any student learning biochemistry and preparing himself/herself for exploration of the newer and broader horizons in diagnostic medicine.
fm10Writing by its very nature is such an intense and lonely exercise, it was not an easy to write this kind of book without making some inadvertent errors. I will always feel grateful for some healthy critical comments from readers. It will make me wise enough to grow and bring in me the best for future editions of the book.

This work would have not been possible without the support and encouragement of my well-wishers. I appreciate and extend my thanks to:
I cannot repay in words the support and motivation extended to me by Dr MCR Vyas (Professor and Head, Department of Pathology, Dr SN Medical College, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, Ex-MCI Inspector), Dr AK Acharya (Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, Jodhpur Dental College and General Hospital, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India), Dr Bharat M Mody (Ex-Dean, Jodhpur Dental College and General Hospital, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India and presently Principal, KM Shah Dental College and Hospital, Vadodara, Gujarat, India) and Dr BR Vyas (Medical Director, Jodhpur Dental College and General Hospital, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India).
Finally, I would greatly remiss if I do not thank to wonderful publishing house, M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, and everyone from publishing house, especially Shri Jitendar P Vij (Chairman and Managing Director), Mr Tarun Duneja (Director- Publishing), whose timely email kindled the flame in me to write the book. I would also like to thank Ms Samina Khan (PA to Director) and Mr KK Raman (Production Manager), whose consistent support, untiring cooperation and time-bound proofreading made it possible for me to come out with the book in the shortest possible time. I am much obliged to my publisher for being extremely helpful and accommodating—without his support it was not possible to bring out the book. I once again thank everybody.
