Abstract

Primary bone tumors of the spine are uncommon, accounting for a small percentage of all primary bone tumors. Tumors of the spine are more frequently diagnosed as occult lesions, before the onset of neurological deficit or pain. With more involvement in aggressive spine surgery, neurosurgeon must be familiar with these lesions and various therapeutic alternatives that are available. In a study from the UK, the incidence of primary spinal tumors has been estimated at 2.5-8.5 per 100000 people per year. They may be benign or malignant. Metastatic tumors are 40 times as common as primary tumors. Pathology and management of primary spine tumors in general are discussed followed by brief notes on common primary tumors.
