Abstract

From a simple attribution like “it’s all in the genes”, which itself is a complex aspect, to “it’s all due to form and function”, growth studies have taken a major leap mainly because of improvement in instrumentation and material available to study growth. Scientific understanding of growth, it’s evolution over the years and the current concepts of what controls craniofacial growth is well researched and presented in this chapter. Over the years, some theories that were proposed earlier seem obsolete given the present array of evidence-based research available. But given the complex nature of craniofacial growth, to pinpoint one theory as “this is how growth occurs” is overreaching. Voudoris’s hypothesis is in current acceptance as the micro-mechanical aspects of growth and the analogy to light-bulb dynamics is backed by years of animal research model, as is Pterovic’s. Based on the previous theories and concepts their research work is a body of evidence that mandible can be growth modified. The chapter is exhaustive in enumerating all the concepts and theories, points for and against every theory which is a very succinct for viva-voce preparation.
