Abstract

Ophthalmic disorders in children include a spectrum of diseases some of which present as acute sight-threatening and rarely life-threatening conditions, which have to be considered and treated as emergencies. The approach to a child with an ocular emergency will of course depend on the age of the child and severity of the condition, but will equally importantly depend on the experience and expertise of the attendant physician be it a general practitioner, pediatrician, ophthalmologist or rural health guide. Care will have to be provided at the primary, secondary or tertiary level as the case may be and as far as possible, properly instituted measures at each step including prompt and correct referral when needed will go a long way in minimizing morbidity.
