5Preface
The 21st century has witnessed phenomenal explosion of knowledge and application of communication-cum-information technologies accelerating the access to the knowledge. The expanded quantum of technology in nursing profession has further redefined competencies generating opportunities for purpose-oriented actions and commitment-driven society, for which nursing students are expected to be competent teachers. To prepare this complex role, nursing students need time to focus on developing basic teaching skills and self-confidence in a non-threatening learning environment. Nurse educators take an active role in their learning and share ideas for new educational opportunities using educational technologies by and large. Therefore, nurse educators are challenged to meet the complex needs of the current nursing students and humanize their courses by intentionally designing relevant curriculum in a supportive learning environment.
Undoubtedly, this book is developed to cater the needs of nursing students. It was originated with a task of fulfilling the prescribed syllabus of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) for the subject Nursing Communication and Educational Technology. During the process of development of this book, the author had decided to enlarge in the breadth and depth of the content with an intention to cater undergraduate and postgraduate students in nursing. Thus, this book is developed by giving flavor of its own, both in scope and content by being unique.
This book has begun with Communication as first chapter where application of communication in nursing with general concepts is thoroughly dealt with and continued with Interpersonal Relations as chapter two, that is focused largely on nurse-patient interaction, their influences, barriers and strategies to overcome such barriers. It further enlarges its explanation with application relating to Peplau's interpersonal relations theory, transactional analysis and the Johari window.
Chapter three deals with Human Relations where the fundamental concepts are extensively explained and its application in health care environment continued with groups and its concepts and completed with understanding self and team work in nursing.
It is followed with Guidance and Counseling in chapter four. It encompasses the meaning, need, principles, functions and requirements to organize guidance and counseling program in nursing colleges. The tools and techniques of counseling and problems faced by the counselor along with managing personal crisis are dealt with.
The author has gone beyond the prescribed syllabus as stated earlier from chapter five through chapter nine. Chapter five elaborates on Philosophy and Education with their general concepts, their interdependence and various traditional and contemporary philosophies of education. Chapter six focuses on Curriculum where the general concepts, influencing factors, curriculum model, curriculum construction and organization remain as prelude for course planning, unit planning and lesson planning 6that are explained extensively. Subsequent with it is Educational Objectives as Chapter seven in which Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives in relation to three domains of learning are classified and explained with active verbs.
Chapter eight deals with Educational Technology which is briefed on its scope, general objectives, functions, classifications and its contributions. The executions of it are dealt with in the subsequent chapters. Chapter nine exclusively is dealt with Teaching and Learning Process where concepts of teaching and learning are detailed separately. It encompasses principles, characteristics, theories, laws, and the strategies. Chapters ten and eleven deal with Methods of Teaching and Clinical Teaching respectively where all innovative methods have been included focusing on application in nursing.
Chapter twelve is Educational Media which is dilated on all educational media available currently and also explains its uses, advantages and its limitations. Any form of teaching is not complete without Evaluation and therefore it is dealt with in Chapter thirteen. It widens the boundary by furnishing purposes, functions, principles, characteristics, evaluation process, construction of test, scoring and analysis, clinical evaluation and curriculum evaluation. This book is completed with chapter fourteen on Information, Education and Communication for Health which incorporates the principles of communication in dissipating health information to individuals, families and communities by various media.
This book is expected to be of high value for all nursing students and will remain as an excellent resource. The author's vision is to enlighten the nursing community by widening the horizon of knowledge and a ray of it can be accomplished through this book.
