Abstract

This chapter is dedicated to analyzing methods for classifying pregnant females into low-risk and high-risk group and to methods used for the fetal surveillance. Preconception counseling, preimplantation diagnostic methods and role of molecular biology in antenatal fetal monitoring are also discussed. Assessment of fetal wellbeing is important not only for high-risk patients but also for other pregnant women who might develop unexpected complications in the course of otherwise normal pregnancies. The evaluation of fetal heart rate patterns, without the added stress of induced contractions, has been widely incorporated into antenatal care for both screening and diagnosis. It is an assessment of immediate fetal condition. A proper clinical antenatal examination will help in recognizing fetus at risk and will help us to use the appropriate tests available to achieve the ultimate goal of a healthy baby.
