Abstract

Liver accounts for approximately 2% to 3% of the total body weight of an adult and weighs approximately 1400–1600 gm (2.5% of body weight). The ability to regenerate after resection or trauma is unique characteristic of to liver, which allows a surgeon to perform major resections. The liver is one of the first organs to develop in the embryo, and it rapidly becomes one of the largest organs in the fetus. The development of the liver parenchyma, biliary system, and vascular supply reflects the anatomical relationships of these structures in the adult organ. Understanding of segmental and lobar anatomy of liver is very important before proceeding for any hepatic resections or liver transplantation.
