Abstract

Techniques of verres needle insertion and techniques of confirmation of proper verres needle insertion are described. Importance of Surface anatomy, Body Mass Index, Patient position, and abdominal wall lifting in minimizing vascular injuries is mentioned and strategies of avoiding them in difficult situations described. Methods of minimizing bowel injuries and management of injuries if they occur are given. Alternate techniques for establishing pneumoperitoneum, like direct trocar insertion, open trocar insertion, gasless laparoscopy, Optical verres, and use of needles with rapidly expanding sleeves are described. The chapter ends with a consensus document on laparoscopy entry techniques.
