Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Delhi
I feel privileged to write the foreword for this distinguished book Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology under the editorship of Prof KC Singh, Prof Neerja Goel, Prof Shalini Rajaram and Dr Surveen Ghumman. The subject of Gynecology and Obstetrics has assumed a jet speed in new technology, in practically every field and to keep pace with it, new books are always welcome.
This book is divided into three sections and it ascends beyond the boundary of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is crossing the horizon to peep into allied topics like litigations, chronic pelvic pain, psychiatric disorders and nutrition, some of these topics are of immense relevance in today's practice of medicine. This book will serve the intellectual and technical needs of all Gynecologists and Obstetricians. The authors’ name list is a thrilling mixture of most reputed researchers and clinicians from Delhi, outside Delhi and overseas, and I congratulate all of them for carrying on this work so ably.
Lastly in my long professional career, I have never felt so proud to see the growth and potential of the editors and have the opportunity and honor to recognize it.

11Preface
Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology follows our first book Current Practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology and hopes to find a wider readership both in India and abroad, the concept of the book remaining the same. This book, therefore, endeavors to update readers on a wide variety of topics in Obstetrics and Gynecology, all of which have significance in routine practice. The chapters have been prudently chosen to provide in-depth information on current concepts and management modalities, and will benefit the postgraduate student and the practicing gynecologist alike.
The chapters on antenatal steroids, antihypertensive drugs in pregnancy, progestins in obstetrics and gynecology, recurrent pregnancy loss and female genital prolapse are extensive, well-researched and provide a wealth of information on recent concepts. A renowned expert with wide experience in pain management has written the chapters on chronic pelvic pain and intractable malignant pelvic cancer pain. Maternal nutrition is yet another chapter written by experts in dietetics and the authors have gone an extra mile to make this chapter informative and useful. In the chapter on medical abortion consensus on the optimum dose, route of drug delivery and the duration of pregnancy for which treatment remains effective is discussed and also the pros and cons of medical abortion. Non-descent vaginal hysterectomy written by the editors is based on a book on the same subject published earlier this year and reflects experience gained in this technique over the past few years.
We are pleased to have a new member, Dr Surveen Ghumman in the group of editors. We have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with all the authors who gave us the liberty to edit the text to maintain uniformity. We would like to thank all authors for sparing their valuable time and intellectual skills in writing the chapters and again despite all efforts this book has taken more than a year to appear in print.
