67Preface
There was a time when Haematology was the poor cousin of Surgical Pathology, but certainly not anymore. In the last few decades Haematology has been recognized as a separate and full-fledged specialty. Separate departments have come up almost at every referral hospital. Recently, DM in Haematology has also been introduced at certain places. Clinicians are showing keen interest in Haemato-oncology. In this scenario a reliable and dependable laboratory is like a concrete foundation on which the castle of diagnosis is built.
The automated procedures are widely employed in hospitals, but the skill to perform the test manual methods can not be ignored completely.
This manual is targeted towards the students of Pathology and the technologists working in a Haematology Laboratory at a secondary and tertiary care level. The basic techniques of Haemogram have not been included. Special emphasis has been given on techniques of bone marrow procedures and processing, because it has been observed that most of our technicians are not exposed to the processing of Trephine biopsies.
Malaria is endemic in many tropical countries. The chapter on identification and estimation of parasite density, specially in cases of P. falciparum shall be beneficial in the early diagnosis, management and prognosis of the disease.
The postgraduates preparing for their MD examination would also find this manual quite informative and handy.
I hope this manual serves its purpose in bringing quality and reliability to the Haematology Laboratory.
I would like to thank my teachers and colleagues at JN Medical College Aligarh, AMU and KFSH, Buraidah, KSA who inspired me to write this procedure manual. I must thank my family members who have been the constant source of encouragement during the completion of this manual.
