Abstract

G6PD is an essential red cell enzyme. In some parts of the world and especially in the Middle East some people have hereditary deficiency of G6PD leading to haemolytic anaemia. Ingestion of Fava beans by persons deficient in G6PD enzyme leads to haemolysis. G6PD levels can be measured in the red cells and plasma. Dichlorophenol–Indophenol (DPIP) is a simple and economical procedure for estimation of G6PD in blood. Decolorization process takes more than 80 minutes in G6PD deficient patients.
