Abstract

Normal haemoglobin is stable when heated in a waterbath at 50°C while the unstable haemoglobins like haemoglobin E are not and they are precipitated. The haemolysate for the test sample is mixed with the buffer of pH 7.4 and heated at 50°C if unstable haemoglobin is present a copious flocculent precipitate is formed within 60 minutes. The test is sensitive and specific for unstable haemoglobin.
