9Preface
Recent developments and advancement in ophthalmology have made a sea-change in overall management of retinal detachment. With the refinement in microsurgical instruments, suture and implant material, the technique of retinal detachment surgery has attained a high standard and has resulted in better visual outcome than it used to be earlier. Advent of vitrectomy has further helped and armed the retinal surgeons in tackling some of the complex, recurrent and mind boggling retinal detachments.
Since science and more so medical science is a dynamic field where every year new technique and invention keep pouring in, we thought of writing this book to give the latest state-of-art techniques for various types of retinal detachment that we encounter in our clinical practice. We have limited ourselves to the practical aspects of retinal detachment surgery so as to give hands on knowledge of the management of retinal detachment surgery.
This book is a kind of skill transfer compendium which is divided into 18 chapters and is easy to understand. Chapters like Vitreous substitutes, Anesthesia for retinal surgery, Instruments, implants and suture materials in retinal detachment surgery have been included to give extra flavor and information so that the readers do not have to refer to other books.
We hope all residents, fellows and practising ophthalmologists will be benefited and will find this book both handy and handful. We are greatly indebted to all contributors for sticking to their time limits and guidelines we had provided them.
We are also thankful to Shri JP Vij, Chairman and Managing Director, M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd who has reminded us of our task ahead and taken pains in bringing the book in this form.
