5Preface to the Fifth Edition
Pharmacists occupy an important position in community health care and as such their role has changed from simple dispensing to that of treatment of patients during the need hours in a limited way. Pharmacist is first person who is being consulted by an average patient before seeking expert advice. Hence, pharmacists are the basic pillars of our health programme and need to be imparted with adequate training and teaching regarding common ailments and their management. This small volume comprises the basics of pharmacy, common medical and surgical problems, common drugs in use, simple poisoning and immunization programme which are invaluable for a sincere pharmacist. This book can be used as a ready reference.
In fifth edition we have included certain more useful information about common ailments and medicine and about drugs.
Chapters of practical importance such as Pharmacist and Patient Relationship, Absorption and Distribution of Drugs, Family Planning have been added.

6Preface to the First Edition
The role of pharmacist has not remained simply to dispense the medicines prescribed by doctor, but today he has become a key paramedical staff specially in villages and has to know about certain day-to-day diseases, their basic treatment, prevention and first aid procedures. Without this it will be very difficult to achieve “Health for all by 2000 AD” in our country.
Keeping this fact in view, book has been written and we are sure that it will meet the requirement of the day of a pharmacist.
