Abstract

This chapter discusses neurological disorders of larynx, which is the chief organ of the body responsible for glottic competence, maintenance of the airway as well as for the production of speech. Disorders of the neural supply of the larynx result in derangement of either or all of these functions. The larynx comprises of three main subdivisions such as the supraglottis, glottis and the subglottis, the latter acting as a neurovascular watershed. All the intrinsic muscles of the larynx except the cricothyroid are supplied by the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the superior laryngeal completing the muscular innervation. Recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis may be unilateral or bilateral, and depending on the function lost, may be abductor or adductor palsy. The vocal folds are fully adducted and respiratory distress is a prominent feature owing to the lack of adequate glottis chink. Speech therapy is used to hasten the process of voice compensation.
