5Foreword
The incidence of discoloured teeth in young people in Hong Kong is high, the result of fluorosis and tetracycline prescription. Consequently, the Department of Conservative Dentistry and the Dental Technology Unit have, over the years, had many and valuable opportunities to gain expertise in all aspects of the construction of porcelain laminate veneers. This book makes liberal use of photographs to illuminate the text, and affords ready and practical guidance on the clinical and laboratory stages of porcelain veneer preparation.
I am pleased to have been involved, although in a small way, in this enterprise, and am honoured to have been asked to write a Foreword. I am sure that the enthusiasm, and wealth of clinical and technical expertise that has made possible the writing of this book will benefit not only students, dentists and technicians, but ultimately the patient, whose wellbeing must be the principal concern of all who deem themselves professionals.

7Preface
Over the last decade, the provision of porcelain laminate veneers has become one of the most important aesthetic restorative techniques in Western countries. Increasingly, these conservative restorations are also becoming more readily available in other countries, where there is often a high prevalence of tooth defects caused by systemic factors.
An attractive appearance has been shown to increase a person's self-confidence, personal relationships, and even the success of his or her career. Unfortunately, adverse character judgements of a person may be made at the first contact, based on an unattractive dental appearance, irrespective of the causes.
The text is intended to provide dentists and technicians with concise information on how porcelain laminate veneers can be used to improve the appearance of patients who require treatment for a wide range of unattractive dental conditions.
Successful results depend not only on the clinical and laboratory techniques used for porcelain laminate veneer fabrication, but also on an understanding of the scientific background of the procedures involved. Therefore, we have intentionally started each chapter with a general description of the topic and current opinions, and have illustrated the important clinical and laboratory aspects with selected photographs. In order to help the clinicians and patients at the treatment planning stage, a range of different cases treated is presented in an appendix. A representative list of materials used by dentists and technicians is also included.
