Abstract

Dynamics of blood flow through body was investigated by French physicist and physician J.L.M Poiseuille in 1799. As the blood vessels are not rigid and fluid flowing through them is non-newtonian the Poiseuille’s law does not apply as such to flow of blood through vascular system. This chapter highlights principles of flow dynamics in human body. Differences in thickness and distensibility of blood vessels make flow of blood through them a complex process. Turbulent flow being clinically important its conditions and features have been highlighted. Fahreus-Lindqvist effect, plasma skimming and magnus effect observed in flowing blood have been briefed in this chapter. Complexity of blood flow makes this parameter difficult to measure. In order to meet requirements of an ideal flow metering system, both invasive and non-invasive techniques have been developed. A detailed description of recent methods of blood flow measurement including ultrasonic Doppler technique has been given in this chapter. Further this chapter explains flow velocity in different types of blood vessels with the help of a mechanical model.
