It gives me immense pleasure in introducing the book titled “Basic Human Genetics”, written by Dr. (Mrs) V. Kapur and Dr. R.K. Suri.
This book provides basic knowledge of human genetics requi-red by medical students. The text covers essentials of genetics in a simplified manner and superfluous details have been deleted. The applied aspects of genetics to clinical medicine are stressed throughout the book.
The book is a valuable contribution towards fundamentals of human genetics and it will be very useful for the medical students. I wish this book all success.

6PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDiTION
The reception of the first edition of the book has been marvellous and this has prompted us to revise the book.
During the course of preparation of this edition, every page has been scrutinised to bring the book up to date. An attempt has been made to incorporate new material. Some new tables and illustrations have been added to facilitate understanding of fundamentals of the subject.
We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Prof. S. Bhardwaj, Head of the Department of Anatomy, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, for her constant encouragement.

The present book is designed to be an introduction to the fundamentals of human genetics. The text has been arranged in small classified parts. It is adequately illustrated with simple line diagrams. Tabulated form of the text has been used for quick reading and lasting memory. The practical applications of genetics to clinieal medicine are stressed throughout the book. Attempt has been made to meet the requirements of medical students. We shall be grateful to the readers for their suggestions to improve the book.
