Were the Moorfields Manual alive it would be celebrating its 11th birthday. Eleven is an in-between age, when one starts to sense the passing of childhood, aware that the approaching teenage years are somehow different. Life will change.
There is now almost limitless clinical information available online. So why bother with a book? Is it just the authors’ plaything? Maybe. But then the aim of this book is not to add to the information out there, but rather to distil clinical evidence, experience and techniques into a useable format.
When I imagine someone opening this book, it is most often a stressed junior ophthalmologist or optician, with a queue of patients waiting to be seen. Not for lack of curiosity, but she is not, at this particular moment, interested in the pathophysiology of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome. Rather, she wants to know how, precisely, to manage Mr Smith's spontaneous corneal defect; which eye drops, how often, for how long, and when to see him again?
As time passes, I hope that this book remains useful to both you, and Mr Smith.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Moorfields Manuals have benefitted from the contributions of more than 70 authors, many of whom are undisputed heavyweights in their subspecialty. But as important as their clinical knowledge is the rigor with which they have condensed their clinical experience into a super compact format, ever mindful of their readers’ perspective. Thank you.
I also want to thank the many staff at JP Medical, working behind the scenes to bring this book to market. Special thanks go to Richard Furn and Katie Pattullo in London, and Harsha Madan in New Delhi. All three have been an absolute pleasure to work with.
