Optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography and structural OCT are, at the present, time necessary for understanding pathogenesis, clarifying morphology and structure of retina and choroid, and refining diagnosis and management of ocular conditions. OCT imaging evolution presents us with an exponential increase of the quantity of data we have to classify, sift, assess, count, and preserve. OCT assessment and interpretation activity encompass both a technical and an intellectual aspect.
This handbook is the result of close collaboration of an international group of specialists: David Huang and Yali Jia (Portland, Oregon), Eric H Souied (Creteil France), Francesco Bandello and Giuseppe Querques, Milan, Italy, Marco Rispoli, Maria Cristina Savastano and myself in Rome Italy. I thank Donata Piccioli, the artist who illustrated all our scientific works and textbooks, for her beautiful drawings.
We wrote this handbook to help and guide the clinician in assessing, classifying, sifting and selecting information. After exposing the pathophysiology of the diseases, we describe the basic lesions, and then explain how these elementary lesions combine together to form clinical situations. Finally, we rapidly outline the disorders management.
All our OCT and OCT angiography figures were obtained with Optovue OCT. This practical handbook is extensively illustrated with cross sectional and “en face” OCT images, drawings, and several tables.
