    Abstract

Blindness is one of the leading causes of disability in Latin America, and in Colombia, it ranks first with 43% of all cases of disability; 80% of the causes of blindness occur in people of productive age, and these causes are largely preventable. Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are two of the most prevalent pathologies in the population; their early diagnosis and timely treatment are the primary prevention strategies to avoid catastrophic outcomes for vision. In Colombia, as in many developing countries, there is a shortage of ophthalmology specialists; consequently, patients have limited access to this service. Telemedicine-based blindness prevention programs are a safe and efficient strategy to guarantee care for the population at risk of potentially dangerous eye diseases.
