Abstract

This chapter focuses on chemistry and metabolism of nucleotides. Nucleotides are organic molecules that serve as the monomer units for forming the nucleic acid polymers deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), both of which are essential biomolecules in all life-forms on Earth. Nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acids. This chapter presents a broad discussion on nucleic acid, components of a nucleotide, metabolism of purines and disorders, and metabolism of pyrimidines and disorders. Nucleic acids are polymers of nucleotides joined by three phosphodiester bond. Two types of nucleic acid are DNA and RNA. General properties of nucleic acids are also described briefly in this chapter. At the end of the chapter, multiple choice questions are also given along with their explanatory answers.
