Abstract

Carbohydrate metabolism denotes the various biochemical processes responsible for the formation, breakdown, and interconversion of carbohydrates in living organisms. The most important carbohydrate is glucose, a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that is metabolized by nearly all known organisms. This chapter discusses major metabolic pathways and minor metabolic pathways. Major metabolic pathways include glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, and glycogenolysis. Minor metabolic pathways include HMP shunt pathway, uronic acid pathway, polyol pathway, fructose metabolism, and galactose metabolism. Anaerobic glycolysis, clinical correlation of glycolysis, regulation of glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and reciprocal regulation of gluconeogenesis, and glycolysis are also covered in this chapter. Multiple choice questions along with their explanatory answers are also provided at the end of the chapter, which are very helpful for students for the preparation of their exams.
