Abstract

This chapter describes assessment of knowledge such as essay type question (ETQ), short answer questions (SAQs), multiple choice questions (MCQs). Essay type of examination may be one of the oldest types of examination and also one of the mostly used in India even today. Essay type questions permit the pupil to respond by selecting, organizing and presenting the facts he/she considers appropriate. Short answer questions are typically composed of a brief prompt that demands a written answer that varies in length from one or two words to a few sentences. They are most often used to test basic knowledge of key facts and terms. Multiple choice questions are composed of one question (stem) with multiple possible answers (choices), including the correct answer and several incorrect answers (distractors).
