Bursae in the lower extremity are typically located on top of prominent bony protrusions to facilitate the movement across these structures or protect from direct trauma. Acute bursitis is characterized by focal tenderness, swelling, and discomfort with associated decreased joint range of motion. Chronic bursitis has prominent swelling or thickening with relatively modest associated pain and tenderness. Iliopsoas bursae are located between the anterior hip joint and iliopsoas muscle. Bursitis here is often associated with articular pathology (osteoarthritis [OA], rheumatoid arthritis [RA], septic, etc.) or hip flexor overuse. Retrocalcaneal bursitis is typically from overuse or repetitive trauma but can be inflammatory.
